Hi,
The backdoor connection will be ended when the target machine is switched off.
Will the connection automatically be restored when the target machine is switched on, or is this a setting in Empire?

Hi!
Yes the connection will be lost once the computer is shut down. Empire includes some modules that will install a persistent backdoor that will be triggered once the computer is started. So just look for persistence in the modules page and use one of them.
